About
Alhaj Anwerali Mohamedjaffer Kassamali Jivraj was fondly known by the name of Potello sadly passed away in Mombasa on Thursday 12th February 2015 (22nd Rabi’ul Aakhar 1436 AH).Born on 11th November 1935 in Zanzibar, Marhum Anwerali was from a philanthropist family of Kassamali Jivraj Meghji. Marhum was a dedicated social worker from his young age and served in several organizations within and outside the community for the welfare and wellbeing of the underprivileged people, especially in Mombasa, Kenya.
Community Service & As a Philanthropist
The Holy Month of Ramadhan was a special occasion for Marhum; he would approach family, friends and well-wishers to join him in the food distribution, like the daily Iftar in the evening during the Holy Month of Ramadhan for the local community members in the old town of Mombasa. This was his passion, for the last many years he was seen with some young volunteers happily gather to assist him in the distribution of food packets.
Ms Maria Vivek who works with a local NGO in Mombasa had the following to say about Anwerali Bhai in her report submitted for the Ramadhan Relief Works carried out in August 2011 – “Having worked in the ‘charity world’ for over two years now, I can say that this man is truly making an effort for his community, an honest and true response to the famine in one of the forgotten areas of the city. I would like to thank Mr Potello for all his efforts here, he who makes a difference with limited resources, and you (WF and AFED), for your generous contributions. He could not be doing this without you!”
Loss to Mombasa Jamaat
Mombasa Jamaat, the Africa Federation and the World Federation have lost an amiable kind-hearted worker, who cared so much for the underprivileged community in his township. Regrettably, his absence in this Holy Ramadhan will surely be felt by many who knew him and will miss the compassion he had towards the poor and the children.
In his condolence message, the Africa Federation Chairman, Alhaj Anwarali Dharamsi had the following to say – “It was with deep grief and sorrow that I and my colleagues at Africa Federation learnt of the passing away of Alhaj Anwerali Mohamedjaffer Kassamali Jivraj in Mombasa, verily a great loss to the community - a Gem of a person who lived a simple life with humility and self-respect. He shall be remembered for his selfless services towards the society of the underprivileged people in Mombasa Township and in nearby villages, especially for his cherished activity of food distribution during the Holy Month of Ramadhan. I wish to end this message with a quote of the Ayah in Surah Hud (11:23) ‘Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide eternally therein’.”
- We pray to Allah (SWT) for His maghferat and for acceptance of all his noble deeds and services to humanity, and May He grant the departed soul a lofty place amongst His chosen ones – Ameen.
- Please remember Marhum Anwarali and all Marhumeens with Sura-e-Fateha.
