Gulamabbas Mohamedhussein Ali Khaku was born on 27th September 1945 in Mombasa to Mohamedhussein Ali Khaku and Fatmabai Bandali Bhanji. Educational Journey
Gulamabbas bhai holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Karachi – Pakistan. He has a General Certificate of Education from University of Cambridge. He also has a Teaching Certificate from Coast/Shanzu Teachers College and Welding Metallurgy from University of Nairobi. He took up a course in Welding Equipment & Design from Hobart Bros in Amsterdam in 1979, Application Specialist Course from Castolin Eutectic Institute and Maintenance Repair and Welding techniques from Feltham in U.K in 1981. Furthermore, he has also done a Regent Sales Course from United Kingdom and Tack Sales Training Course in Nairobi in 1982.
Professional Achievements
Gulamabbas bhai is a member of a number of organizations, including the American Welding Society (U.S.A), the Canadian Welding Society, the Institute of Welding (U.K), the Institute of Marketing (UK), and the Institute of Management (UK). He was a teacher at Alibhai Panju Primary School (Present Jaffery Academy) and has been a Technical Training Representative with Industrial Equipment (K) Ltd, UTP & Hobart welding products for 3 years. He has worked in various capacities with Car & General (K) Ltd for eight years. He worked as the branch manager for Welding Alloys Ltd for five years and as the field sales manager for Pakistan Eutectic - Castolin International. Gulamabbas bhai started his own company – Habari Service Station in Mombasa, Kenya in the year 1980 and currently he is the Chairman of Habari Insurance Brokers Ltd and Weldwell Ltd.
Keen Sportsman & Committed Social Worker
In addition to enjoying swimming and fishing, Gulamabbas bhai is a passionate sports fan who has participated in badminton, cricket, and football. He has held the position as the Cricket captain of Mombasa Sports Club. He continues to play golf and is a life member of Nyali Golf & Country Club, where he served as the golf captain, chairman and greenkeeper. Furthermore, he is also a life member of Mombasa Golf Club where he served as vice captain. He is also a representative of the Senior Golf Society, a member of the Kenya Golf Society, an active participant at Jaffery Sports Club, and currently serving as a Chairman and Trustee of United Sports Club. Gulamabbas bhai is an avid golfer who holds the record for having three "Holes-in-One" in Nyali, Mombasa, and Malindi Golf Clubs.
Gulamabbas bhai has consistently shown deep interest in the development of the community and has dedicated himself to providing whatever service he can to the community and society at large. As a result, he has served in a variety of areas and still does so today. In addition to serving as Vice Chairman of the Ithnaasheri Young Men Union (IYMU) of Mombasa and an ex-committee member of the Mombasa Jamaat for more than four years, he has worked as a volunteer for more than 50 years. He was appointed Team Manager for Mombasa Jaffery in the 7th K.S.I Supreme Council Sports Festival that was held in Dubai in 1995 where he accompanied a squad of 32 players participated in soccer, cricket, volleyball, tennis and squash.
Gulamabbas bhai has attended over 50 AFED Conferences as a Councillor and Delegate. He is a member and trustee of Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya. He served as an ex-Trustee of the Mombasa Jamaat for more than 12 years, as well as an electoral commissioner for the Mombasa Jamaat KSIC and currently of AFED. He is AFED’s Representative at the World Federation Constitution Review Committee (CRC).
He is married to Kulsum Hussein Rashid Hemraj, and they have two sons Mohamed Hussein and Kassim and 6 grandchildren.
Community Services
A man with strong determination and passion for upliftment and betterment for the community, one of his major and humble contribution to the community has been joining his wife Kulsum bai Khaku and two brothers Murtaza and Salim for the Somali evacuation led by Alhaj Sajjadbhai Rashid. Gulamabbas bhai is a truly altruistic individual who has set an example in serving others selflessly, combining his key skills and utilizing his strength to the best of his ability for the progress and betterment of the community.
