Brief Profile

The Africa Federation Secretariat received with profound sadness the news of the demise of Ayatollah Dr. Sayyid Fadhel Hosseini Al-Milani who passed away on Monday 2nd September 2024 (28th Safar 1446 A.H.) in London.

Ayatollah Dr. Sayyid Fadhel Al-Milani was born to a prominent religious family in Karbala, Iraq. He studied religious studies at the Hawza of the Holy City of Najaf – from 1962 to 1970 under late Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Abul Qasim Al-Khoei and from 1968 to 1970, under the late Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Mohsin Al-Hakim.

Dr. Sayyid Fadhel also attained a BA in Law from School of Law, Beirut, Lebanon in year 1967. He then went on to achieve an MA in Arabic Literature from the University of Baghdad in 1970. He migrated to Mashhad in 1971 where he attended advanced Fatwa Assemblies and completed his studies under the guidance of his grandfather, Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Hadi Al-Milani. He was awarded Ijtihad at the age of 30. His work on Ijtihad, lectures on Imamiyah Jurisprudence, published in six volumes, is still currently used in the Hawzas of Mashhad and Qum. He had authored seven books in Arabic, seven in English and one in Persian. Some of his well-known books are:

Fatimah Al-Zahra Ummu Abiha: Mother to her Father He remained in Mashhad for just under 13 years, organising the seminary of Mashhad, that had 3,500 students at the time, under the supervision of his grandfather. He briefly visited Damascus in 1983 and taught in the Zainabiyyah Seminary until 1986.

In the year 1986, Ayatollah Sayyid Dr. Fadhil Al-Milani migrated to the United Kingdom to pursue further education. He graduated from Oxford University with a PhD in Islamic Philosophy in 1994.

Whilst in London, he noticed that the community were in dire need of religious guidance. He wrote to Ayatollah Sayyid Abul Qasim Al-Khoei, informing him of his observations, to which Ayatollah Al-Khoei responded positively and informed him of his plans to establish an institution, later becoming the Imam of Al-Khoei Foundation.

In addition to being an Imam at Imam Al-Khoei Islamic Centre, Ayatollah Al-Milani was the Dean of International Colleges for Islamic Studies, London and Islamic studies Ph.D. candidate supervisor. He was an academic researcher, teacher and mujtahid, as well as a distinguished author.

He was appointed UK representative of the late Ayatollah Sayyid Abul Qasim Al-Khoei and is accredited on behalf of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Al-Hussaini Al-Sistani.

Ayatollah Sayyid Dr. Fadhel Al-Milani dedicated much of his time to helping restore marital relationships and addressing many other social challenges faced by the Shia community in the West. His enduring efforts in promoting Islamic unity and spreading religious values, his legacy shall always remain cherished.

It is with profound grief that we at the Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaats of Africa received the news of the passing of your beloved father, Dr. Sayyid Fadhel Hosseini Al-Milani in London on 2nd September, 2024. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the Imam of our Time (ATFS), the Al-Milani family members and the Shia Ithna-Asheri community globally on this sad occasion.

Your late father was an eminent Scholar and a Researcher of high caliber having served the wider Shia community for over five decades in different fields. He had been an active supporter of Interfaith relations and participated in numerous functions, seminars etc. promoting good understanding between different communities, faiths and sects. His Islamic religious and social services, especially in the west, will be cherished for many decades to come. It is with great sadness that the community will be devoid of his selfless services and guidance.

May Allah (SWT) grant your late father Thawabe-Jariyyah for his noble and selfless services to Islam and to the wider community, May Allah (SWT) place him in the proximity of Ahlulbayt (AS), Aameen.

A request for Surah-e-Fateha for your Marhum father and for all the Marhumeen.

The death of an eminent Ayatollah of such a high calibre is a big loss to the Shia community around the globe. We pray to Allah (SWT) to raise his rank and place him in the closest proximity of Ahlulbayt (‘A) where he continuously receives the mercy and grace of Allah (SWT).

On behalf of all constituent members of the Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaats of Africa, we extend heartfelt condolences to our Living Imam, Al-Mahdi (ATFS), the Marjae-Taqleed, Ulema-e-Deen, Marhum’s family, his students and the Shia Ithna-Asheri community globally on this sad and irreplaceable loss of an eminent Scholar.

  • We request Momineen to remember Ayatollah Sayyid Dr. Fadhel Al-Milani and all the Marhumeen with a Sura Al-Fateha for their maghferat.
