Certain individuals emerge as beacons of hope and inspiration, their lives a testament to unwavering strength and a deep commitment to serving others. One such individual was Zainab bai Sheriff whose personality was defined by strength, resilience, and a deep commitment to uplifting those around her. As an educator, mentor, artist, and a pillar of her community, she inspired others through her dedication and steadfast faith. Her life embodied the virtues of purpose and perseverance, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth while holding firm to her trust in the greater plan of Allah (SWT).

Born on 8th January 1965 in Mogadishu, Somalia, to Ali Hussein Bhanji and Sakina Ali Hussein Bhanji, Zainab bai was the youngest in a close-knit family with three brothers - Iqbal, Ramzan, and Basheer and one sister, Maryam. Her family’s pursuit of better education led them to migrate to Karachi, Pakistan. It was there that Zainab bai pursued her education, excelling in both primary and secondary schools at Happy Home and PECHS School, eventually obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree in Economics.

At a young age, Zainab bai was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a condition that affected her vision. However, her journey with this condition was not defined by limitations. Encouraged by her family, especially her eldest brother, who shielded her from any discouragement, Zainab bai continued to pursue her goals with optimism and resolve. She adapted by using technology to continue her pursuits. She saw her condition as an opportunity to deepen her faith and trust in Allah, choosing to focus on her many abilities rather than any perceived shortcomings.

In 1987, Zainab bai married Hameed Sheriff and moved to Arusha, Tanzania, where she embraced her new life and began teaching at the madrasah. Although unfamiliar with Kiswahili and Gujarati, she quickly learned the languages and soon became a beloved Urdu and Madrasah teacher. Over her 31-year career, she touched the lives of countless students, instilling not just knowledge but also the values of perseverance, self-belief, and faith.

Zainab bai was very dedicated towards gaining knowledge of the Holy Qur'an and participated in various Qur'an competitions over the years. She excelled in the AFED Qur'an Hifdh competition in the 1st Runner-up position in the 41+ age category during the 17th AFED Qur’an Competition in Mombasa in 2024/1445. Her devotion to the Qur'an was evident not only in her personal study but also in her role as a mentor to others who followed in her footsteps. Her achievements inspired many in her community and underscored her dedication to the Qur'an, which she shared generously with others.

Beyond teaching, Zainab bai actively contributed to her community, serving on the Africa Federation Capacity Building Board (CBG) as a facilitator for the Leadership Development Program (LDP) and Mentorship Development Program (MDP). Having been inspired by Maria Pattinson to dig deep into her own iceberg, her work empowered youth, encouraging them to realize their potential. She was also part of the Madrasah Committee of Africa Federation Tabligh Board (AFTAB).

Despite her partial vision, she mastered various art forms, including fabric painting, pot painting, and embroidery. She shared her skills by teaching young women these crafts, fostering a spirit of creativity and self-expression among her students.

Zainab bai was also deeply involved in her community. She served as the treasurer of the ladies' committee of her Jamaat for nine years, offering her time and expertise to support communal activities. Her compassionate nature led her to become a godmother to numerous individuals, supporting anyone in need. Her husband remained a pillar of support, sharing a life centred on faith and positivity.

As we reflect on Zainab bai’s life, we recognize that for her, challenges were not setbacks but tests from Allah, a philosophy she instilled in others by saying, “There is always a way forward, and with faith, that way will lead to fulfillment.” In every facet of her journey, she epitomized the essence of service and compassion, inspiring those around her to embrace hope and purpose amidst their trials.

Zainab bai Sheriff departed from this transient world for her heavenly abode, on 22nd September 2024 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania leaving behind a legacy of kindness, service, and unbreakable spirit.

May Allah (SWT) grant Marhuma Zainab bai Sheriff a high station in the proximity of Ahlulbayt (AS), where she is enveloped in Allah's (SWT) bountiful mercy and grace. Let us remember her and all the Marhumeen with Sura-e-Fateha.
