He is the son of Abdulrasul Gulamhussein Virjee and Shirinbai (daughter of Suleman Daya Walji).  His father Abdulrasul was born in 1914 in Mombasa, Kenya. Abdulrasulbhai was a great sportsman and played cricket for Kenya. He was a right arm fast bowler who opened the bowling for Mombasa Jaffery in 1930's.
