This is a short biography of an Ismaili scholar/blogger.

After I completed my first degree in Product Design my interest shifted from designing products to what stories were told in products - about people's lives and how they reflected on the individuals, their families, ethnic and faith groups and in general on the human society. Hence my MA and PhD lead me into the study of art and material culture. I see material culture traversing over almost all social disciplines. In short material culture is the prevalence of the presence of the object in fashioning our social and art world.

After graduation I continued in the same line from 1972 to 2002 learning, researching, teaching, publishing and curating exhibitions on material culture. The objects projected many contexts: culture, history, identity, art and craft, migration and settlement, religion and oral traditions, dialogue and community building and even peace and conflict resolution traditions. For almost ten years I worked on community participatory exhibitions so the owners of the artifacts were also co-curators of the exhibitions with me. My inspirations came from ethnographic and folk museums where I saw the sights and heard the sounds in objects of daily use in ordinary folk's lives.

Things made my life: My career, tastes in clothing and furnishing, my life style and I think even my world view has been molded by things. I came to realize that Material Culture, a discipline in the Social Sciences, draws on artifacts to tell stories combining facts with myths, geography with history, art with politics, poetry with traditions across generations and cultures turning stories into legends. The ten steps in Stories from Things are written out of this experience.
An interesting novel by Sultan Somjee

The review of the book could be traced

http://thebeadbai.blogspot.com/

Who were Bead Bais?

From the early 20th century, Satpanth Ismaili family homes spanned the African geography - the forests, grasslands, highlands, the Great Rift Valley, plateaux and deserts. Often their homes had a courtyard behind the family store and often the home-store had a small room furnished as a jamat khana. Often their home-store was on the only street and they were the only Asian African family in the area.

In the stores on the savannah, the Bais worked sorting and stringing ethnic beads. Many Satpanth Ismailis started their businesses in East Africa selling beads like my great grandfather, Rajan Nanji Pachani. Every morning he used to line fist size heaps of beads on a grass mat, sit crossed legged under a tree at the market in Mombasa and wait for the ethnic people to view and hopefully purchase some of his beads. That was around the turn of the 19th century when Rajan Lalji’s bead shop (established in 1905, in Nairobi’s boisterous Jugu Bazaar) supplied the stock to the rural bead merchants. Fatma Bai, the wife of Rajan Lalji would have been among the first Bead Bais of East Africa. So huge was the trade in beads that the bazaar behind the stone jamat khana was called Moti Bazaar. Two of the well known Bais of the bead bazaar were known as Chak Bai and Puri Bai (surnames?). Moti in Gujarati and Kutchi, the native languages of Satpanth Khoja, means a bead. So many Satpanth Khoja merchants traded in African ethnic beads that the bazaar was also known as Khoja Bazaar.

Often it was the Bais who put the beads on display panels and racks in the stores where they would sit and chat with indigenous women and men who came to admire their colourful stock. They also prepared meals three times a day. In time, the Bais sewed dresses to sell and hemmed kanga and shuka sheets as they turned the hand wheels on Singer sewing machines while sitting on the veranda of the store. They also did assorted shop tasks when the men rested in the afternoon and they embroidered pillows and bedcovers, and mended clothes. The Bais had many children, from six to sixteen, and even more, but not all survived in the African hinterland. They taught the children the sacred songs of guru-pirs and told faith stories. They made the Satpanth family home in Africa at the equator.

The character of Moti Bai in the book is inspired by the lives of the Bead Bais I had met though not specifically about any one of them.

This book of fiction is about voyaging, losing India, coming to the new land, old worship styles, imagining, politics and life in the old shantytown of Indian Nairobi. I have brought together these layered stories I heard growing up and again when curating exhibitions about the coming of the Satpanthis to East Africa (Ma aging gracefully, 1994) and then the Asian African Heritage Exhibition (2000 -2005). The material culture in the book is about women’s historical memories. That is to say, events and stories are built around articles of embroidery and beadwork, stitching and cooking; the stone hand mill, the bandhani, pictures and pieces of jewellery like bangles and the nose siri, body décor we call saangar.We grew up with stories told around artefacts.

Dr. Mohammed Murtaza: Youth Dr. Mohammed Murtaza selected as top science and engineering talent – Arizona USA

Dr. Muhammad Murtaza, an early career scholar with a focus on tumor DNA analysis will begin his Bisgrove fellowship at TGen and the Mayo Clinic after he completes his graduate studies at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, England this summer. He has already completed dual degrees in medicine and surgery from Aga Khan University, Pakistan. Murtaza has published groundbreaking research in Nature and the New England Journal of Medicine on using circulating tumor-specific DNA to measure changes in tumors and to understand how cancers evolve in response to treatment. At TGen and the Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, he will continue this work and co-lead the setup of a program focused on increasing the understanding of the issues while seeking clinical application of circulating tumor DNA analysis, applying methods in genomics and bioinformatics. This research could potentially lead to circulating DNA-based cancer blood tests for human patients allowing better disease tracking and more informed treatment decisions.
A Social, Cultural, Educational & Religious E-Forum
Under the Facilitation of the World Federation of KSI Muslim Communities
Issue No. 10-04, December 24, 2004/ Zilqad 11th, 1425 AH

As social beings, we live in a complex web of relationships that not only define how we interact with people, but also how we define ourselves. Thus, for example, someone can be a UK citizen of Indian origin who is a Muslim, in a broad sense, and also, in a more specific sense, be a Punjabi Muslim from a particular village in Pakistan, of a certain tribe, clan, and family. Part and parcel of what we are is our ethnic identity – crudely speaking, where we came from in a racial sense. Throughout the Muslim world, you will see that, in spite of an emphasis on Islamic brotherhood, and the importance of subsuming our separate identities within this fraternity, you will find Arabs, Malays, and so on, all quite proud of their ethnic identities, and all happy to be defined through these ethnic labels.

The notable exceptions seem to be the Khojas. How often have you introduced yourself to an outsider as a Khoja? How often do you think of yourself as a Khoja? Within the community, being a Khoja is of course taken for granted, and so there is no need to state the obvious. But even then, you will find that the Khoja appellation is often used in a self-depreciating way – I have lost count of the number of times I have heard a Khoja joke told to me by another Khoja. More often then not, the joke is a play on the meaning of the word, which, by an unfortunate coincidence, means “get lost” in Urdu.

What do you know about your history, apart from (perhaps) the Khoja Bibi case? Do you know where your ancestors came from, what caste they were when they were Hindus, how they were converted, and by whom? Do you know what forced them to move from Sindh to Gujerat, their second homeland? Do you know what was the reason the Khojas migrated out of this second homeland, and why do they keep on spreading? Do you know why some of us speak Kutchhi as a mother tongue, and the majority speak Gujerati, while among the Ismaili Khojas, the reverse is the case? Do you know how many paths our ancestors took, before they stumbled onto the True Path? As a people, we are remarkably ignorant of our history – it is almost as if we were ashamed of it.

I have often wondered why should this be the case. After all, as a community, we have quite a lot to be proud of. Mosques and communities run by Khojas, wherever in the world they are, are often the best run, and certainly the best organized. Where there are limited resources, you will find Khoja communities placing an emphasis on the young, in the form of madressas, even if it means excluding or minimizing other functions. Even if there are only two or three families coming together in some remote town, they will get together and do something, forming a community. And in the last twenty years, many of the most informative and comprehensive Shia Islamic websites that have been developed have a Khoja hand or brain somewhere in the background.

Are we ashamed because we feel like parvenus, which is a term reserved for people who suddenly become very rich, for example, but are not accepted socially by the “older” rich society? Are we worried that we may be on the True Path, but our history, filled with worship of odd deities, and perhaps even of fighting against Muslims, makes us somewhat suspect, Muslim parvenus, so to speak, and so we should reject our ethnic identity any way we can?

The truth, whether we like it or not, is that we are a product of a Hindu culture which had (and has) its good and weak points, like any other culture in the world. And yet, in the last few decades, we have tried strenuously to eject any relics from that culture; for example, even our marriage ceremonies are carefully scrutinized to ensure that there are no Hindu rituals left. I often wonder why that should be the case. After all, the Arabs and the Malays and the Nigerians will still celebrate their marriages in their own cultural style, without feeling the least bit guilty about it. The true test here is not whether a ritual is Hindu, but whether it is anti-Islamic; if it isn’t, then it should be accepted as part of our cultural heritage.

Going further, it seems to me that the Khoja community would be a perfect community to study from a genetic and anthropological viewpoint. We are spread out all over the world, but we hardly marry non-Khojas, so someone could analyze our genes right back to the few people, living perhaps a thousand years ago, from whom we are all descended. Furthermore, our cultural traits and habits are still retained, even if the languages we speak change; presumably, that would make the Khoja community a fascinating community to study from an anthropological viewpoint. Why are there no Khoja university students who want to make us the subject of their PhD thesis? Why the utter lack of interest in us among ourselves? Perhaps we need to start teaching Khoja history in our madressas, so that our children learn a bit of ethnic pride.
Nothing that I have said should be seen as being incompatible with our Islamic beliefs, or somehow in contradiction to it. If all people, anywhere in the world, were the same, then the world would be a boring place. And if all Muslims, all over the world, were just Muslims, and nothing else, the world would likewise be a boring place.
== PROFILE ==

Haji Gulamabbas was born in Mombasa in 1919, had a formal education for only two years. However with perseverance, he acquired enough knowledge to be able to fluently read, write and speak Guajarati and English and was at ease whilst conversing in Urdu and Kiswahili. He also showed deep interest in religious education and developed close friendship with Mulla Mohamed Jaffer (father of Alhaj Mulla Asghar) and Haji Alibhai M. Gulamhusein (a teacher at Hussain at night School).

He conducted a small business in old town of Mombasa which became the hub of activity during the nights of Mahe Ramadhan where religious discourses would be held under the banner of ‘anjuman-e-saa-e-meen’ (‘group of those who fast’) led by Mulla Mohamed Mulla Jaffer and chaired by Haji Mohamed R. Valli. In the last decade of his life he joined Gulamhussein Rehemtulla Walji as partner in the business of insurance brokerage and both then embarked on welfare activity in the community.

== CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS THE COMMUNITY ==

On the socio-welfare scene, initially he joined Ithna-Asheri Volunteer Crops and later on he became a active member of the managing committees of Ithna-Asheri Young Men’s Union (established in 1945) and Mombasa Jamaat. As a delegate and councilor representing Mombasa Jamaat, his presence was recognized at the meetings of the Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaats of Africa and views and opinions expressed by him eloquently and in a soft but emphatic tone were given due importance.

In 1953, together with Mulla Gulamhussein Datoo (Bishon) and Mulla Mohamed Mulla Jaffer, he floated the idea of inviting reputed Ulema to recite majalis in Mahe Muharram and also as resident Aalims. This resulted in the visits of Mullah Jaffer Hussein, Allamah Rashid Turabi, Syed Mohammed Naqvi, Syed Mohammed ljlal Khwaja Mohammed Latif Ansari and other leading Ulema from sub-continent as Zakereen during Mahe Muharram and as resident Aalims.

From 1960 to 1970, he dedicated almost all of his time in serving Faiz-e-Hussein the then subsidiary body of Ithna-Asheri Young Men’s Union (formed in 1945 to cater for the needs of Hajis, Zuwwar, other travelers, the sick and the poor). He extended the services of Faize Husseini to Nairobi whilst accompanying patients to Nairobi for medical treatment.

At the time of revolution in Zanzibar in January 1964, while attending the funeral of Haji Ebrahim Hussein Sheriff Dewji (the then Chairman of the Federation of Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaats of Africa) he displayed the qualities of able leader in organizing distribution of food, medicine and clothing to the affected people during those traumatic times. He stayed in Zanzibar for almost a month and gave praiseworthy support to the community who were affected in the aftermath of the Zanzibar Revolution.

== A MILESTONE IN MOMBASA JAMAAT ==

In 1966 he brought up the idea of amalgamation of the two Jamaats in Mombasa. Having mobilized the youth of both the Jamaats. This noble idea was immediately welcomed by Chairman of the Africa Federation Haji Mohamedali Meghji and Alhaj Mulla Asgarali M.M. Jaffer (who was at time Hon Secretary of the Africa Federation) resulting in the dissolution of the two separate Jamaats on 18th October 1966 and formation of a single Jamaat on 28th October 1966. Haji Gulamabbas was elected as a managing committee member of the amalgamated Jamaat.

== HONOURS AND RECOGNITION ==

The Federation of K.S.I. Jamaats of Africa awarded “Husseini Medal” to him for commendable services and that also after much persuasion he accepted it.

He breathed his last on Friday 23rd October 1970, at the young age of 52 leaving a lasting impact on the community having earned the title of “Abul Ghuraba” (father of the needy) from the public at large.

To honor his service to community Mombasa Jamaat established Memorial Trust of “Haji Gulamabbas Kassamali Bahadurali on 24thOctober 1970. The proceeds of which are being utilized for academic and welfare needs through Faize Husseini.

The ability to communicate a scale of values, to impart an attitude to knowledge such as his own that was his supreme achievement.

== Biography ==

Maalim Najafali Tejani was born in Zanzibar in 1920 and started pursuing religious training at home as early as the age of six years. Bright, energetic and soft spoken, he then joined Madrasah which was started by his grandfather Haji Rehmatulla Tejani under the two qualified teacher Mulla H. M.Rashid and Mulla M. M. Jaffer. He qualified as a teacher in Urdu and Dinyat and later he became the principal of Faiz Madrasah till he migrated to Dar es Salaam in 1968. He was a man of good understanding and sound judgment, deliberate in forming his conclusions,
comparatively of few words, but whenever he spoke his words were appropriate and his views weighty. The subject of religion was at all times and on all occasions his great theme, and perhaps no man was more uniformly devoted to the cause of Allah. (s.w.t). He was pre-eminently a man of prayer, who would be seen at dawn preparing the mosque for mo'mineen for Subh prayers. He took keen interest in the majalises of Allama Rashid Turabi who paid a visit to Zanzibar 1954 and this inspired him to start reciting majalis himself and often his voice was heard in the most exalted strains in his several Majalises encouraging mo'mineen to be reconciled to Allah (s.w.t). Always obliging as a stand by for any absentee reciter. First and foremost he stands out in the memory as a simple personality. As a teacher, Maalim was outstanding. No one who was taught by him could easily forget the experience of his teaching. His teaching was never the mere imparting of information. The ability to communicate a scale of values, to impart an attitude to knowledge such as his own - that was his supreme achievement. His knowledge was never used merely to impress but rather to stimulate and fertilize the minds of our young boys and girls when he was teaching religion in schools
in Dar es Salaam.. He also used to train and encourage youngsters to become madrasah teachers and majalis reciters. Marhum Maulana Aqa Hayder strongly and publicly recommended the Jamaat to give him the control of the mosque so that the correct timing of Adhaan be maintained.

== Community service ==

He would also voluntary be in the mosque early before the prayer timings to inspect cleanliness of the mosque. His humility and sense of belonging to the community was remarkable, Maalim was a keen listener to people's problems and help them solve their problems by Istekhara and recommending supplications. He was genuinely concerned about everybody and loved them, and everyone felt the same about him. Maalim Najaf is just the most explicit example of that virtue and His imparting of religious teachings will be regarded as one of the greatest gifts ever given to the community. He showed everyone, especially the youths that despite the materialistic nature of the world; a man can serve Allah (s.w.t) and the community if he submits to His will fully. We thank Allah(S.W.T) for sending such a man who is still remembered fondly by the community. In the last few days of Holy month of Ramadhan in 1421(2001) he succumbed to illness and left for heavenly abode on 12th Shavval 1421 (7th January 2001). This eminently pious man was no less remarkable in death than in life. Let us all pray for his maghferat and remember him with a sura e Fateha.
== In his own words ==

My career in the service of my Community is close to 40 years and with the grace of Almighty Allah SWT, I am still in the leadership of my community having served the noble offices, in various capacities culminating to my present Chairmanship of the AF of the KSIJ. To date, I have served this position twice, two terms each. Indeed, it is the Africa Federation which has been a creation and a spring board for all other federations.

The opportunity of having been able to serve my Community all this long, is certainly a great achievement to my conviction to serve my people and must admit that I cannot, by any stretch of imagination, accredit this success due to my personal self but to Allah SWT whose blessings facilitated smooth discharge of heavy duties and responsibilities entrusted upon me each time.

This noble spirit that was kindled in my most prime years is still living and indeed, a major source of motivation and resolve into declaring my candidacy for the highest office in the Community.

I am cognizant and consider it absolutely vital that geographical mobility is inseparable part of the whole duties attached to the President of the WF in an effort to maintain pace with global changes in economical, social, moral and religious awareness, for the benefit of non else but our Community who are endowed with the religion, the best and the true one on this Universe.

== Message to Milton Keynes 25th Anniversary Celebration ==

Brothers and sisters gathered in Milton Keynes, Salaams and dua.

As Milton Keynes Jamaat celebrates 25th anniversary of the opening of the Zainabiyya Islamic Centre, it is only befitting that the organisers have displayed vision in organising an ‘Ancestors Day Exhibition’ to recall:

Where, when, why and how we emerged as a distinct Community to be known as the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Muslim community?

How long and arduous has been our journey of survival to date?

In that spirit we need to ask: Where we stand today and under the fast changing world, what future do we envisage for ourselves and for our progeny for the next 25 years?

How well equipped we are to manage the envisaged change?

The first exhibition of this nature in Britain was held in Leicester on 19th January, 2014, which was well received. Glad to learn that Mr. Burket Walji will make similar presentation in Milton Keynes.

Why this Exhibition called Ancestors Day?

There is nothing special in belonging to any community, race or tribe. It is purely a matter of coincidence of birth, or shall we say, accident of birth!

What matters most is how righteous and virtuous life one lives in the sight of Allah Almighty.

Khalaqallahul Jannata leman Ata’ahu wa ahsana wa lav kana abdan Habashiyya,

Wa khalaqannara leman asahu wa lav kana Qurashiyya.

Allah swt has created heaven for those who obey Him and do good deeds, even if he be a bondage slave from Habasha (Ethiopia);
And has created hell for those who disobey him, even if he be from the (renowned) tribe of Quresih.

- Imam Sajjad (A.S.) to Tavuse Yamani. -Masnaqib Aale Abdi Talib by ibne Shahr Aashub.(Vol.4, Page 151.)

Allah in His Mercy decided that we should be born in a certain community. Are we going to question that divine choice?

Can we run shy of having been born in any particular race or community? Or for that matter, can we be arrogant for being what we happen to be? What, if we were instead born as Eskimo or Aborigine?

Ladies and gentlemen, it is worth recognising here that the Cutchi and Gujarati speaking Khoja are not the only Khoja on this planet earth!
There are also Sindhi, Punjabi and Kashmiri Khoja from the Indian sub-continent. Besides, there are also others known as Khoja in different parts of the world, about which I have made references in my book: “The Endangered Species.”

In Milton Keynes we have several families who are known as Khoja of Narwhal from the Punjab or from Kashmir.

We have had several such families in Nairobi, Kenya. I know of a good friend in Milton Keynes, Syed Nayab Haider who is a non Gujarati Khoja and a respected member of the community. I hope he is present in this gathering and I would like to greet him with: Ki Galla, changa?
To Gujarati and Cutchi speaking participants I would say: Kee.n Ayo.n and Kem Cho!

I know also know of a well-known Punjabi Khoja who became a leading member of the Ismaili Khoja Jamaat and its leading Waez and Missionary.
The environment and the dynamics at play for the Punjabi and Kashmiri Khoja have been somewhat different to that of the Sindhi, Cutchi and Gujarati Khoja.

For the converts in Gujarat and Sindh, considering their background and the particular environment they were living in, plus the multiple challenges posed to them as a result, retention of the Khoja identity and development of the structured community set up became crucial for their survival and for the preservation and promotion of their faith as Shia Ithna- Asheri. Besides, because of the split from the main body of the Khoja community on doctrinal grounds, social and economic boycott was practiced against them by their cousins. There were also incidence of physical threats against certain individuals and also some cases of assassinations are recorded.

All this provided added challenge for them to get better organised. This identity and the community structures put in place as a result have played crucial role in their emergence as a Shia Ithna-Asheri community in India and in their settlement and growth in Africa.
Later on, this identity played no less crucial role, especially after the Uganda Exodus in 1972, in their rehabilitation as a cohesive religious community in Europe, North America and in the rest of the world.

Today, the world wide Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri community numbering less than 150,000 are nationals of almost two dozen different states and settled in over forty countries. Despite their widespread dispersal, they are linked with each other – thanks to their organisations.
In moments of crisis such as the Zanzibar revolution 1964, Uganda exodus 1972, unrest in parts of Madagascar in 1987 and evacuation of an entire community of 1,100 from Somalia in 1991, when no help or even message of sympathy and support was forthcoming from any quarters, the unity and the spirited outlook of the community provided a ray of hope, where, otherwise, everything looked bleak.

In the aftermath of the massive earthquake in Cutch (India) in 2001 that severely affected our small community of around 700 heads remaining in Cutch in different locations, it was the unity and the organisational structures of the community that promptly responded to the immediate needs of the affected people and at the same time generated global support for commendable rehabilitation and reconstruction work.

Historically, but for this identity and the organizational structures under which the Khoja community operated, their fate following their migration from India to Africa in the latter half of the nineteenth century and in their subsequent migration from Africa and from the Indo-Pak sub-continent for resettlement in the West during the latter half of the twentieth century would have been difficult to visualise.
A look at what befell other migrant communities that lacked such identities and organisational structures will be revealing.

In my book “The Endangered Species” I have reviewed related developments at some length. There are a number of youngsters from within the Khoja community, including some who have acquired some religious education in Iran or Iraq who tend to question the need for retaining our Khoja identity and for operating as an organised cohesive society.

When individuals view issues from narrow personal socio economic angles only or simplistic emotionalism, they often tend to project themselves as a self-serving elitist group and miss out on the overall holistic perspectives.

To all youngsters, community leaders and the religious scholars, Mulla Saheban, Maulanas and Zakirs who ascend the Minber, I would respectfully suggest that they read the autobiography of Mulla Qader Husein Naif – Karbalai, first published in 1900, in order to understand and appreciate the trials and tribulations of the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri community as they emerged as a distinct community some 150 years ago.

In this context, they can also read about the guidance given to Mulla Qader Husein by Ayatullah Sheikh Zainul Abedin Mazindarani.
Readers would then be able to understand and appreciate what proactive role a Muballigh can play in reforming a society and the way Mulla Qader Husein dedicated over three decades of his life with missionary zeal, driven by a sense of caring concern, love and compassion at much personal deprivation and risk to his own life.

Apart from running traditional Madressa for children, Mulla Qader Husein effectively applied the institution of Minber and Majlis as an extended form of Madressa to cater for the specific needs of the adults. A noble soul, Mulla Qader Husein was undoubtedly a great benefactor of the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri community to whom we owe an eternal debt of gratitude. He lies buried in the courtyard of the shrine of Imam Husein in Karbala.

I will respectfully recommend to all Zuwwar going to Karbala that after doing the first ‘izne dukhul’ as they enter the main gate of the Haram of Imam Husein, they need to recognise that they may possibly be walking over the grave of Mulla Qader Husein buried somewhere underneath.
Please pause for a moment then to offer fateha for this great benefactor of the Khoja community.

The question we are now faced with is:
But for this unity and the structured set up of our community, where would we have been today?
Demolish these structures and the identity that go with it, and then try to visualise where we and our successive generations will end up in the next few decades?

A million dollar question is: What positive, passive or negative role each one of us is playing in this context in our daily lives
Congratulations to Milton Keynes Jamaat for organising this Heritage Exhibition named as ‘Ancestors Day’.

Over the years I had the opportunity of visiting Milton Keynes several times with late Mulla Asghar and I recall the early formative stages of the Milton Keynes Jamaat and developments taking place for building the Zainabyya Islamic Centre.
It is gratifying to observe that in Milton Keynes much importance has been given to local Madarassa. Here I fondly recall numerous discussions I used to have with late Bahadur Dallal and was always impressed with his enthusiasm to promote the activities of Milton Keynes Madrassah on modern lines and also for initiatives in interfaith activities. In the spirit of ‘let the light shine’, we have to reach out with goodwill, with love for all and malice towards none, and strive work to a culture of harmony all round.

There is a permanent Exhibition on Khoja Heritage in Toronto. You may like to visit the website of the Mulla Asghar Memorial Library and Research Centre, Toronto. http://marcresource.org/
Khoja History – Documentary Film
You may also be interested to learn that a professionally produced documentary film by MARC on the evolution of the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri community commissioned by the World Federation is to be released on 18th May, 2014 in Daressalaam. You can preview a trailer of this documentary film on Www.khojajourneyoffaith.org

It will be worth for parents to sit with their children and watch this film. This documentary will help in understanding where we originated from; account of the long journey to reach where we are today; how our predecessors struggled in India and in Africa.
Recalling our roots may also provide moments for reflection as to what challenges we are now facing and what we can do for our progeny?
I wish your endeavours every success.

Dr. Hasnain Walji is a renaissance man. An educator, historian, author, leader, and scientist in the field of nutrition, he has from his teen years to his indefatigable golden years been on a quest to learn and expand his knowledge. In fact he observes the trajectory of history and social trends and incorporates this arc of evolving issues in his contributions. The hallmark of his leadership is to bend this trend so our communities remain relevant and progressive as we confront new realities and challenges, yet remain true to our faith and traditions.
Born and raised in Tanzania, in the foothills of Kilimanjaro, Hasnain has traversed the world. He commenced his institutional service to the Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri communities in 1974 as the Secretary to the London Jamaat, and president of Milton Keynes Jamaat in 1976. Soon after the World federation was formed in 1976 he was appointed as Secretary General, serving with the full confidence and as protégé of the founding president, the late Mulla Asgharali M M Jaffer, for more than two decades. In due course he succeeded to the presidency of the Federation, and his association in various leadership capacities has been unabated since.
His pioneering establishments of various institutions reflect his progressive vision of addressing emerging needs of our communities. They range from the founding team of the Mulla Asghar Memorial Library and Resource Center in Toronto in 2009, the Institute of Islamic Learning in the Metroplex (IILM) in Dallas, to the SAFINAH group serving the social and healthcare needs of local residents in southern California, where he currently resides in Irvine. Amongst his numerous services to various community boards, his signature initiative has been the annual inter-faith gathering on Mother’s Day in Dallas and Los Angeles.

Fluent in several languages, he has recited majalis in English, Urdu and Gujarati on all continents at various Khoja centers, and penned many articles in several Islamic journals. He has authored 26 books on naturopathic medicine that have been translated from English to Chinese and other European languages, and served as editor of the “The Vitamin Connection” – a professional journal. In addition he has scripted a television series on “The World of Vitamins”. As a dedicated oral historian of the Khoja communities he is producing a groundbreaking anthropological documentary “The Khojas – A Journey of Faith” that spans the past 600 years of its history. He is also documenting the genocide of Pakistani Shias under the banner of Penmanship for Peace, a Social Justice Institute he co-founded that focuses on the plight of persecuted minorities.

A master of communications and media usage, Dr. Walji’s skills transcend into the use of technology to applications in integrative healthcare and behavioral science. He is currently VP of Knowledge Management at Frugality Game™ Inc. and CEO of IQBiotix Inc., which specializes, in formulating and marketing probiotics.

Hasnain’s continued remarkable contributions from his active engagement on boards ranging from Universal Muslim Association of America (UMMA) to Interfaith Peace Ministry of Orange County, thought provoking lectures on the challenges of the day, his professional addition to the science of nutrition, embrace of technology in advancing learning, be it madressah resources or finance or healthcare, the breadth of his socio-political endeavor in tackling causes of social and justice that confront our communities - all remain unparalleled, and his legacy will outlast his grandchildren.

== Establishment ==

The genesis of the MARC was an aspiration by the then WF President Dr Hasnain Walji to initiate centres or libraries in the Memory of Mulla Asgharali M M Jaffer in all major Khoja Jamaats in the world. At the time, London, Dares salaam, Karachi, Bhavnagar and Toronto and Mombasa were all considered as potential venues. The first such project that came to fruition was the Mulla Asgher Memorial Hall in Mombasa in 2002. MARC is the second such memorial project to be established. This was made possible in 2009 when the work at Bathurst was re-initiated after a pause. The first phase was finished and an opening ceremony was held on Saturday, October 24th, 2009. The facility was finally complete in April 2011 and this was inaugurated with the Quran exhibition which was open for 16 months. Through the good offices of the World Federation of KSI Muslim Communities, the total cost of establishment has been donated by the Hiridjee Family Foundation. We gratefully acknowledge their renowned philanthropic services and thank themfor the continued support in maintaining the Centre. We also thank Al Hajj RazalAlybhai Hiridjee for his guidance and assistance in the establishment of this Center. We also gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Alhajj Razzaq Damani the then President of ISIJ Toronto and Al Hajj Arif Asaria, the then General Secretary, for their assistance in the planning and construction of the ultra modern facility.

== Vision ==

Acknowledging that access to knowledge is a cornerstone of Islam. MARC serves as the knowledge navigator for the community by being a primary resource for knowledge, reading, research, and popular media in print, non-print, and electronic formats. And hence its declared vision is “To be a premier state of the art Islamic resource centre in North America providing research and learning facilities to Muslims as well as non-Muslims”.

== Services ==

MARC strives to foster community cultural life by hosting exhibits, housing historic, fine arts, and literary collections, and providing spaces that attract scholars, students and the general public to read, study, and browse. MARC continues to expand its a multi lingual Reference Library, manuscripts on Islamic literature, bibliographical information for research purposes, digital access to ahadith and tafseer literature, multimedia resources from around the world, Khoja community archives, permanent exhibitions on Islam and works of Muslim scientists, scholars and artists. It has been developing media facilities, under the name MARC MEDIA to offer a rich multimedia experience during exhibitions.

Lectures and Workshops: Marc is now a popular venue for short course, workshops and seminars on a regular basis.

We are proud that within its short operational history, MARC has already started to make a major impact.
